Rehab Physiotherapy - The Necessity for Rehab Physiotherapy

A physiotherapist is a key player in a patient's road to recovery. Unlike the other healthcare providers, the physiotherapist's work starts during the pre treatment or pre-surgery and goes beyond the stay in the hospital. He is a very familiar person for those who have been confined in a hospital for a surgical operation, injury or other diseases.

Hospital care used to be a standard procedure, but with the lack of beds, shortage of manpower and inadequacy of space, this is not a prevailing practice anymore. Prolonged stay in the hospital means a substantial dent in the patient's financial condition. The client or patient becomes financially vulnerable and at the same time physically susceptible to other diseases because of the weakened state of the body. He might become prone to contract staphylococcal infections and pneumonia.

Patients who are not fully recovered are endorsed to rehab facilities for the post-treatment care under the close attention of the physiotherapist rather than lengthening the stay in the hospital. The stay in the rehab facility will ensure that the patient will be fully recovered and has regained all his faculties necessary for daily living. It is widely perceived that a rehab facility is a better place to recuperate than the hospital. The emotional and psychological well-being is considered and not just the physical condition of the patient.

The trend started in the mid 1980s. The growth of rehab facilities came as a solution to the dilemma of patients who still need to be monitored but whose conditions do not merit an extended stay in the hospitals. This is especially true with patients who had treatments for fractures due to osteoporosis and to undergo post surgical treatment procedures or recovering from a heart attack or a stroke. It is believed that physiotherapy is imperative for the gradual and complete healing of the patient before they are released from medical team's accountability.

In the rehab facility, on-duty nurses are present and periodic visits from the attending physicians are done. Monitoring of the intake of medications is ensured and since some of the patients require prescription drugs, it is necessary to closely work with medical doctors for they are the only ones authorized to prescribe such drugs.

This collaboration of health care providers from the allied medical services is beneficial for all individuals involved. The length of the stay of the patient in the rehab facility relies on various factors such as the nature of the ailment. The patient may be at the rehab facility for a period of two to six weeks. For the duration of the stay in the facility, the patient works with the physiotherapists for daily sessions which might include muscle strengthening exercise, myotheraphy or other methods necessary to bring about hastened and complete recovery.

Rehab facilities are not only for stay-in patients. Outpatients may also attend therapy session in the facility either daily or at regular intervals.

A stay in the rehab facility is preferable than that in a hospital. It provides the patient with the essential post treatment care without being stuck in a dreary hospital or having to face the rigorous daily living of a long complete recovery.

Physiotherapy Treatment Tip #1

People with injuries tend to consult medical doctors and usually demand medication to alleviate pain. Though it brings temporary relief, the palliative effects of medicine only deals with the symptoms rather than the cause of the pain and would usually have addictive side effects. Therein lays the opportunity for physiotherapy. The intake of oral medications may be avoided is there are alternative ways of dealing with pain.

Physiotherapy Treatment Tip #2

Patients who are suffering from various muscular disorders, minor or major injuries resulting to some difficulty in movements and immobility as well as other conditions associated with pain may just benefit from myotheraphy. Assortments of methods are used to deal with pain with the goal of alleviating it or achieve its total elimination. In this type of physiotherapy, massage, electrical nerve stimulation, movement exercise, acupuncture, meditation and the application of hot or cold compress are some examples of the techniques which are being employed in treating a wide range of complaints.

Physiotherapy Treatment Tip #3

Physiotherapists must also work in tandem with the parents to ensure a strong support system. Parents need to urge their kids to be more mobile. They also have to be made aware of all that is entailed in the treatment procedure. They also have to understand fully that the development in their child’s condition will greatly depend on them.
